The purpose of the Exacta is to select two horses in a single race to finish in the first two places in the EXACT ORDER – your first selection must come first, and your second horse must come second.
You can include as many horses as you want in your exacta, but it will cost you R1 per combination.
The more horses you include the greater your chance of winning, but it will increase the cost of the bet.
In this bet the customer has four options:
a. Straight Line Exacta
b. Boxed Exacta
c. Banker Exacta
d. Floating Banker Exacta / Roving Banker Exacta
Banker Exacta
This means that one horse must come 1st and another must come 2nd (in that specific order).
This means that one horse must come 1st and another must come 2nd (in that specific order).
- With any straight-line bet you can only place one number per position.
- There is therefore only ONE dividend (barring a dead-heat for either first or second place) for each race – first and second.
- Given a result of: 1 – 2 – 3 – 4, the winning exacta would be 1&2.
- In the event that there is a dead-heat for FIRST place, there are TWO
dividends. In an example of a result being 1/2 – 3 – 4, the winning combinations would be 1&2 and 2&1.
- Likewise, in the event that there is a dead-heat for SECOND place, there are TWO dividends. In an example of a result being 1 – 2/3 – 4, the winning combinations would be 1&2 and 1&3.
Example:
Selection of horses 2 and 4 they will have to finish in that exact order (2 and 4 is a winner, 4 and 2 is not).
Boxed Exacta
This is a selection of two or more horses to run 1st and 2nd, in any order.
Example:
Say the chosen selections are 1, 2, 3 and 4 boxed, the cost would be determined by
MULTIPLYING the number of horses selected, in this case 4 by 3 horses:
1&2, 1&3, 1&4, 2&1 2&3, 2&4, 3&1, 3&2, 3&4, 4&1, 4&2, 4&3 = 12 combinations or bets
[As with swingers, the number of horses selected multiplied by the number of horses selected less one, but in this case there is NO division by 2 as the finishing order is relevant].
Should the result of the race in which the above bet was struck be 4 – 1 – 2 - 8, the winning combination would be: 4&1 = R23.50 dividend. The ticket would qualify for the R23.50 dividend.
Floating Banker Exacta
This is similar to the boxed exacta where all the selections may run first or second. The floating banker differs by having one selection, which must run first or second, with the other selections to fill the open position. (If the roving horse/selection fills first position then one of the remaining selections must run second and vice versa.) Other words for a floating banker are ‘Roving’ or ‘Roaming’.
Example:
Selection floating banker 2 with 4, 7 and 8 will be 6 bets and horse 2 must finish either 1st or 2nd with one of the others selections filling the other 1st or 2nd position.

The purpose of the swinger is to select two horses in a single race to finish in the first THREE places in ANY ORDER.
1. There are therefore THREE dividends (barring a dead-heat for third place) for each race – first and second, first and third and second and third.
2. Given a result of: 1 – 2 – 3 – 4, the winning swinger combinations would be:
1st and 2nd
1st and 3rd
2nd and 3rd.
[had the result of the race been 3 – 2 – 1 - 4, the combinations would have been the same as the ORDER of finish is irrelevant i.e. 1st and 3rd is the “same” as 3rd and 1st].
4. You can select more than two horses to be in a swinger, but it costs you R1 per combination.
The punter can take three different kinds of swingers, they are:
a. Banker Swinger
b. Boxed Swinger
c.Floating Banker Swinger
Banker Swinger
This bet is to select two horses to run in the top three positions in any order.
Selection: horses 2 and 4.
Therefore if you only select two horses, it will cost you R1
Boxed Swinger
This is a selection of horses where at least two must run in the top three positions.
Example - 5 horses boxed:
Combinations:
1&2, 1&3, 1&4, 1&5, 2&3, 2&4, 2&5, 3&4, 3&5 and 4&5
[the number of horses selected multiplied by the number of horses selected less one, (as there cannot be a 1&1 combination) divided by 2 (as the finishing order is irrelevant].
There are 10 combinations (5 x 4 = 20/2 =10).
Should the result of the race in which the above bet was struck be 5 – 4 – 1 – 2, the winning combinations would be:

Floating Banker Swinger
Same as a boxed swinger but the banked horse must run in the top three positions along with at least one of the other horses selected.
Example: 1 horse banked with 4 horses
Combinations:
Banker 5 with 1, 2, 3 and 4 [5/1, 2, 3, 4] = 4 bets (combinations) = R4 (5&1, 5&2, 5&3, 5&4).
No.5 must finish in the first three positions as well at least one of the other selections.
Should the result of the race be 1 – 5 – 3 – 2, the bet would win on combinations 1&5 (R6.00) and 3&5 (R9.00) [the SUM of these two dividends = R15.00].
You can have up to two banker horses. This means that these two must run in the top three positions along with only one of the other horses selected.
Example:
Selection banker 2 and 5 with 4, 7 & 8 [2, 5/4, 7, 8] = 6 bets, 2&4, 2&7, 2&8, 5&4, 5&7, 5&8. No.2 and or No. 5 must finish in the first three positions as well as any one of the other selections.
Should the result of the race be 7 – 5 – 4 – 2, the bet would win on combinations 7&5 (R6.00) and 4&5 (R9.00) [the SUM of these two dividends = R15.00].

NOTE:
1. In a field of 2-5 runners, there is only one swinger (dividend).
2. In a field of 6 or more runners there are three swingers (dividends).
3. In the case of a dead heat for third place in a field consisting of 6 or more runners, there will be “5” swinger payouts (or dividends), e.g., 1&2/1&3/1&3/2&3/2&3. Hollywood refunds your stake for the two horses that dead heat for third.

‘Tri’ meaning three – The purpose of the Trifecta is to select three horses in a single race to finish in the first three places in the EXACT ORDER.
There are four types:
a. Straight Line
b. Boxed
c. Banker
d. Floating Banker
Straight Line (Banker)
Means you can have one horse for 1st, one for 2nd, and another for 3rd.
With any straight-line bet you can only place one horse number per finishing position.
Example:
Selection horses 2, 4 & 8 = R1.00 these selections must finish in the exact order. In other words the winning trifecta will be 2&4&8.
In the event that there is a dead-heat for first place, there are two dividends.
In an example of a result being 1/2 – 3 – 4, the winning combinations would be 1&2&3 and 2&1&3. Likewise, in the event that there is a dead-heat for
SECOND place, there is again
TWO dividends, e.g. a result of 1 – 2/3 – 4, the winning combinations would be 1&2&3 and 1&3&2.
A dead-heat for
THIRD place would result in two separate dividends being paid on the combination of first, second and the one of the third placed dead-heaters, and first, second and the other third placed dead-heater.
Boxed Trifecta
This bet is a selection of three or more horses to run in the first three positions in any order.
Example:
Selection boxed 1, 2, 3 & 4 = R 24.00 and these selections can finish in any order in the first three, but all three must finish in the first three.
Given the chosen selections of 1, 2, 3, 4 boxed, the cost would be determined by MULTIPLYING the number of horses selected, in this case 4 by 3 by 2 horses = R24.00 (again, because the finishing order is relevant):

Banker Trifecta
In this type of Trifecta you may have many selections for first, many selections for second, and many selections for third.
This is on provision that one of the selections for first must run first, one of the selections for second must run second, and one of the selections for third must run third.
Example:
Banker 2 with 4, 6, 8 & 10 = R 12.00 (selection 2 must win and any two of the other selections must be 2nd and 3rd). The bet would be 2/ 4, 6, 8, 10.

What if there is a dead heat?
A punter can also catch more than one trifecta if there is a dead heat for first, second or third and he has those numbers in a bet.
E.g., in a banker bet 1 by 2, 3, 4, 5 by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 If the result is 1 - 5 - 4/6 (dead heat for third), the punter will catch both trifecta’s because he has 4 and 6 in the same box (1&5&4, 1&5&6).
Floating Banker (Roving Banker) Trifecta
In a trifecta you have the option of one or two floating bankers which must run in the top three positions in any order and the other selections must fill the positions that your banker does not.
When you have only one floating banker, two of the remaining selections must fill the open positions.
When you have two floating bankers, one of the remaining selections will fill the open position.
Another term the punter/customer might use for this bet is a Roving Banker.
Example:
Number 4 is selected to “float” with horses 1, 2, 3 [4/1, 2, 3] costing R18.00.
4&1&2, 4&1&3 4&2&1, 4&2&3, 4&3&1, 4&3&2, 1&4&2, 1&4&3, 2&4&1,
2&4&3, 3&4&1, 3&4&2 1&2&4, 1&3&4, 2&1&4, 2&3&4, 3&1&4, 3&2&4 = 18 combinations.
Result:
2 – 4 – 3 – 8.
Note:
1. If for example you had 3 roving with 2,4,6,7 and there is a dead heat for first (4/2 - 3) then the punter will catch both trifectas (4&2&3 and 2&4&3). If your roving banker dead heats for third, you will be entitled to only one trifecta because your roving banker will appear in one box.
2. A double floating banker 3 and 5 with 2, 4, 6 & 7 = R24.00 (being 24 combinations taken one time) and horses 3 and 5 must be placed in the first three positions along with one of the other selections.

And finally, a result of 1 – 2 – 3 – 4/5, dividends would be declared on combinations 1&2&3&4 and 1&2&3&5.
Boxed Quartet
This bet is a selection of four or more horses to run in the first four positions in any order.
Example:
Selection 2, 4, 6 and 8 = R 24.00 (the bet taken one time with 24 combinations) and these selections can finish in any order in the first four positions.
Given the chosen selections of 2, 4, 6, 8 boxed, the cost would be determined by MULTIPLYING the number of horses selected, in this case 4 by 3 by 2 horses = R24.00 (again, because the finishing order is relevant):

Floating Banker
This is similar to a boxed Quartet in that the selected horses may run in any order in the top four positions. A floating banker differs by having 1, 2 or 3 selections which must run in the top four positions in any order. When you only have one floating banker three of the remaining selections will fill the open positions.
Example
1. A floating banker 3 with 2,4,6,7 = R 96.00 (the bet taken one time) and horse 3 must be placed in the first four positions along with the other selections.

The calculation of the cost of this bet is as with a banker bet (4 x 3 x 2 = 24 combinations), but as the “roving banker” can finish in ANY of the four positions, this amount 24 needs to be multiplied by 4, i.e. 24 x 4 = R96.00.
2. A variation of the “floating” banker option is the “double” and “triple” floater.
In the former option, two horses are chosen to fill any two of the four winning horses. Thus if 1 and 3 are selected to double “float” with horses 4, 5, 6, 7, and the result of the race is 7 – 3 – 4 – 1, the bet wins.

The calculation of the cost of this bet needs to be viewed as a breakdown of what is being requested. Two horses need to be “coupled” with another two horses to finish in the first four positions.
By way of a simple example, we wish to “float” two horses with another two horses – effectively boxing four horses at a cost of R24.00. If we add another horse to the two horses not chosen to “float”, i.e. 3 horses we now have three times the R24.00 “boxed” bets (3 x R24.00 = R72.00).
However, when adding another horse to the three non-rovers, the calculation of the cost must take into account that all non-floaters need to be combined together with the two” floaters”.
The cost is therefore determined by using the following formula:
[R24.00 (cost of roving 4 horses) x 4 (number of horses as non-floaters) x 3 (number of horses less one as non-floaters)]/2 as the order of finishing is catered for in the “boxing” process. The cost of the bet therefore works out to be (24 x 4 x 3)/2 = R144.00.
By adding another horse, the equation becomes 24 x (5 x 4)/2 = R240.00. A double banker 3 and 5 with 2, 4, 6, 7 = R144.00, horses 3 and 5 must be placed in the first four along with two other selections.
3. A triple floating banker 3, 5 and 9 with 2, 4, 6, 7 = R96.00, horses 3, 5 and 9 must be placed in the first four positions along with one other selection.
